10 000 miles in a wonderfully inadequate 1L car for charity.
Proudly supporting the excellent work of Open Arms Malawi and Cool Earth.
On July 10th 2019, Charlie, Theo and Tim will be taking part in the Mongol Rally, a drive of 10,000 miles, over half way around the world, to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. This will lead us across 4 mountain ranges, 3 deserts, multiple dictatorships, 21 international borders and finally the mighty Mongolian Steppe, a huge area of roadless sparsely populated grassland and desert. To make it a challenge, we will attempt all this in a tiny 1L Suzuki, totally unsupported, starting with the combined mechanical knowledge of knowing how to change a tyre. All in support of two worthy charities, Open Arms Malawi and Cool Earth.
The three of us have always loved a challenge, competing Ten Tors on Dartmoor together and scrambling up mountains all over the country. Having absolutely no mechanical skills, a limited budget and a desire for adventure, we thought this would be the ultimate challenge. The idea was simple. Drive a distance equivalent of 1/2 way round the planet, in a tiny car, with no idea what we’re doing, share it on social media and raise some money for charity!
Briefly; Awful road conditions, dust, mud, desert sand dunes, 5000m passes, river crossings, potholes the size of Chippenham, infinite flat tyres, 10 000 bone shaking miles in a crampt sweaty car, boarder queues the length of Wales, black market petrol and resisting urge to walk off in 3 different directions! Our car is as good as guaranteed to break down. We'll just have to fix it with what we've got! When we took on this challenge, we could probably just about change a tyre between us. So we have a long way to go before we can bodge a manifold together with fiberglass and gaffer tape, but we can't wait to get stuck in!
Give us a follow on social media! All the links you could possibly need can be found at the bottom of this page. And most importantly, if what we're doing inspires you, don't forget to donate!
The Navigator
No mountain pass is too high, track too bumpy or ford too deep. Wherever he tells us to drive, we will go. Kinda like an inbuilt sat-nav, set to find the hardest route possible.
The Chef
The muscle. Despite looking like a 40 year old man with a wife and 2 kids, he could probably dismantle the whole car with his bare hands. Hopefully it won't come to this. Also the chef. Makes a mean packet pasta.
The Engineer
Proud owner of an engineering degree and 50 grand worth of debt. Knows absolutely nothing about fixing cars.
